Celebratory destruction!

The week before last was full of pressure or tension as I attempted to create a cake based on the Library’s facade for the centenary celebrations of laying the foundation stones.

Several hours after mixing 60 eggs, 120oz flour, 120oz margarine, and 120oz sugar, I had 5 12” square sponge cakes ready to be modeled into the shape of the building, hoping to lay solid foundations for covering with jam and icing (6 pots of jam and 8 kilo’s of icing).

Getting up on Wednesday morning I realized that the cake’s foundations were not as robust as those of the Library’s – the cake had sunk slightly overnight, and although initially quite heartbreaking, after some first-aid the cake was restored to fairly solid foundations once more!

Then came the laborious task of decorating and adding theintricate decoration to replicate the original building – the hard work had only just begun!  Studying the building’s architectural details in the detailed photographs that I had taken a few days earlier were an eye opener – looking at the features closely, I was amazed how complex and beautiful they were – but totally daunting trying to replicate them in icing!

After three very long tiring days of hard work for me and my friend Ann, (who I thank for the help and continued support throughout in keeping me going), the day of celebrations arrived and it was time to get my life and kitchen back to normal …

But, after all the hard work, worry and mental anguish, what did the Librarian do to my masterpiece?

Inserted a KNIFE and DESTROYED it !
