Our volume will be published during 2012 and is one of four to be produced in Wales; the others are The National Museum of Wales’ collection, a volume for North, Mid and West Wales and another for South East Wales. The Library has recently been working with The Public Catalogue Foundation on producing an affordable colour catalogue of all the Library’s oil, acrylic and tempera paintings. This is part of a national project run by the PCF the aim of which is to improve public access to the art works in public collections. The nationwide collection will later go online in conjunction with the BBC allowing the public free access to the works.
The Library’s volume will have nearly 2000 works listed and illustrated, documenting artists, titles, dates, medium, dimensions and accession details. Although catalogues already existed within the Library, working on this project allowed us to concentrate on standardising data as well as photographing over 500 paintings previously un-captured. For me it was a chance to work as part of a Project Team, which included staff from Collection Care, Systems, Digital Developments and Corporate Services.

The Library collects pictures that illustrate or portray places in Wales, people of Welsh background who live in Wales and other places, as well as individuals who have played a part in Wales’ history or life. See our Pictures webpages for further details
