Julian Thomas

Julian Thomas, the Head of the Conservation Treatment Unit, will be retiring at the end of the year.  Julian joined the Library over forty years ago and his career has been spent furthering conservation throughout Wales and beyond.  He is a master craftsman who has a passion for conservation and has shared his knowledge and skills widely.  He has assisted with the training of over seventy trainees, spreading, through them, his expertise all over the world.

The National Library of Wales holds large and varied collections of books, manuscripts, maps, pictures and photographs, and Julian has fostered the development of the specialist techniques required for the conservation of all these, as well as developing his own skills as a paper conservator.
He has conserved many important Welsh manuscripts, including the Book of Aneirin, and has pioneered the creation of high-quality facsimiles of medieval Welsh manuscripts using techniques to simulate parchment.   He recently produced a facsimile copy of Y Drych Cristionogawl for the Pope’s library.

His fine bindings are works of art.  He is a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders  and has bindings in private collections in the UK, Europe, USA, Russia and Japan. He has also created bindings for several of the Booker Prize contenders.

We wish Julian all the best for a long and happy retirement. His skills, expertise and companionship will be sorely missed. He has  provided a firm foundation for conservation in the Library.  Thank you, Julian, and good luck for the future.
