On a wet and blustery Thursday afternoon, I ventured up to Wrexham to prepare for an Open Evening at the Guildhall. The evening itself was a culmination of a series of events by the National Library in Wrexham, held in conjunction with Wrexham County Borough Council and the local community.
Over a hundred guests had replied to our invite, therefore, it promised to be a successful evening.
The afternoon flew by. By the time we had tested the sound system, checked that the powerpoint presentations were in order, erected our promotional pop ups, it was 6.00pm and guests were starting to arrive.
During the evening, the Library’s Education Department and the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales gave presentations about their work and showed a compilation of local films.
The films went down like a treat, especially the humorous clip of T. Glynne Davies reporting on consumer testing of the durability of plastic bags in the town. The organiser of the test reports and shoppers are filmed carrying the bags around the local streets and shops.
Culturenet Cymru also showed the local treasures that came to their workshops held at Llay, where local people were asked ‘What’s in your attic?’
One of the highlights of the evening was a performance by a group from Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, Wrexham. It was great to see the young, and the… not so young attending the event.
To close the evening, an opening and reception of ‘Old Photos of Wrexham’ exhibition was held at Wrexham Library. This exhibition will be at the Library until the 10th of December, and I’m sure it will be very popular amongst the people of Wrexham.
