As curators of manuscripts one of the ways we ensure that we follow best practice in our profession is to engage in the activities of associations such as the Archives and Records Association (ARA), The Association for Manuscripts and Archives in Research Collections (AMARC) and the Association of European Research Libraries (LIBER).
The LIBER manuscript librarian’s group conference was held in Rome on 26-28 May this year and I was lucky enough to represent the Library at the conference. The conference is a good opportunity to learn about the way archives and manuscripts are curated in different countries across Europe. This year delegates from Denmark, Norway, Lithuania, Belgium, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Portugal, the Czech lands and the Vatican Library gave an insight into the way in which manuscripts and archives are managed in their countries.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Meeting with manuscripts, today and tomorrow”, and covered issues such as born-digital materials, networks of medieval and modern manuscripts, old and new audiences for manuscripts, and the training of manuscript librarians.
The photograph show delegates examining medieval manuscripts during a visit to the Biblioteca Angelica, Piazza S. Agostino.
