Life at the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales is never dull! As Access Management and Development Officer, my main duty is to promote the Archive, and ensure that its collections are accessible to all.
The work varies from day to day. One of my responsibilities is arranging screenings and events at the Drwm. I try to ensure that these events are relevant to exhibitions or other events at the Library.
Last week, I arranged a lunchtime screening of ‘Tryweryn – A Story of a Valley’ and ‘Craith y Cwm’, to coincide with the Claudia Williams: Remembering Tryweryn exhibition currently taking place at the Library. Aeron Prysor, a pupil at Capel Celyn school presented both films by sharing some of his experiences as a resident of the village at the time of the drowning. The screening was a great success, with around 80 people attending.
The next sreening arranged by the Archive will be ‘Pictiwrs Plant’ on the 27th of July. Aimed at primary school children, it will be an hour-long TV programmes and films from the collection. While I am currently in the process of clearing rights to screen some more recent S4C cartoons, a cartoon we will definitely be screening as part of the programme will be some of the ‘Jerry the Tyke’ cartoons we have in the collection. ‘Jerry the Tyke’ (or Jerry the Troublesome Tyke to give hime his full title!) was the invention of Cardiff-based Sid Griffiths in 1925-1927, and I hope the children attending will enjoy it as much as audiences did over 80 years ago!
