Learning and Development

Here goes .. my first blog and your first opportunity to gain an insight into the world of learning and development in the National Library of Wales!

As a Section (HR and Training) the majority of our time has been spent over the past few months has been taken up with the implementation and pilot scheme of our new Self Service HR system. Things are coming along nicely, with the pilot being an excellent opportunity to iron out any hitches with the system and to receive some constructive feedback on how it will be used on a day to day basis by staff.

Annual appraisals are also high on our agenda, and unfortunately despite the deadline to complete being the beginning of June we are still awaiting one or two! As they form the basis of the Training Programme for the upcoming year, they are crucial to ensure that the training we provide is relevant.

Last week I attended the WAG Investment in People Employer Network. Learn Direct were present to highlight the learning opportunities available with them. It is a fantastic resource, although their Welsh language provision was disappointing. We also received a presentation from Christopher Ward, who highlighted the importance of aligning personal and organisational values to ensure a happy workforce. Very John Lewis – which proves that it works!

Being and ECDL centre, Annwen Davies and myself have just returned form a course updating us on the changes and new opportunities that the ECDL version 5 can bring us.  It was a valuable training day, where our marking skills were assessed and also our eyes open to other ‘ECDL packages’ the NLW could use. Food for thought for the next intake of ECDL.

Lastly, we have a number of staff members attending next weeks PSMW Summer School in Lampeter University – this is an excellent immersing learning experience. We look forward to welcoming them, their ideas and inspiration back a week Monday! Also we shall be Live Streaming all keynote presentations throughout next week (they will be available on the PSMW website for the next 12 months).
