Here is a selection of the items recently added by purchase or donation to the Library's non-print collections. These items were acquired in order to enrich and enhance the collection in accordance with the Library's collection policy.

  • A self-portrait, oil on board, framed, by Kyffin Williams, c. 1950s.
  • A large oil on canvas portrait of Mrs Elizabeth Poole-Hughes by Christopher Williams.
  • A large oil painting entitled The Finding of Taliesin by H. Clarence Whaite.
  • A framed mixed media painting entitled Watching the Demolition / Gwylio’r Dymchweliad by Claudia Williams, 2007.
  • Six prints produced from linocuts bequeathed to Gwasg Gregynog by the late Sir Kyffin Williams (1918-2006).
  • An artwork by Eleri Mills, being a hand-coloured etching and aquatint entitled Y Ddeilen Hon / This Leaf.
  • A framed, oil on board painting entitled A shaft of light, that day, on the train, by Alistair Crawford, 2004-5.
  • A framed gouache on paper painting by Ray Howard-Jones of her garden.
  • A framed portrait, pencil on board of ‘Dorelia’ by Augustus John, c. 1900.
  • Five artworks by Pip [Phyllis] Knight-Jones, entitled Team Effort; Junction, Garret, Dinorwig Incline and Defiance. Upper Dinorwig.
  • A portrait, oil on copper, of Hugh Derfel Hughes (1816-90) by William Roos (1808-78).
  • A framed oil on canvas painting entitled Eryri o’r Dwyrain / Snowdonia from the East by Alison Bradley.
  • Four framed paintings by Malcolm Hughes depicting the demolishing of the buildings prior to the drowning of Cwm Celyn village and the Tryweryn Valley near Bala, 1965.
  • A portrait of Mervyn Levy by Alfred Janes, 1931, and a self-portrait, 1953.
  • An oil on canvas painting by Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817), of John Smith, the blind harper of Conwy with penillion singers, signed and dated 1793, with an C18 carved and gilded semi-Carlo frame.

 

 

Manuscripts

 

  • A first edition of Lexicon Islandicum, 1683, annotated throughout by William Wotton (1666-1727), drawing parallels between Icelandic and English and Anglo-Saxon. The whereabouts of the book was unknown until the sale of the Macclesfield Library, probably lodged there via Moses Williams (1685-1742), with whom Wotton had collaborated on an edition of Leges Wallicoe.
  • Holograph manuscript notes for the poem to his father entitled 'Elegy' by Dylan Thomas.
  • A collection of letters from Augustus John to Mavis de Vere Cole, 1934-58, and to Tristan de Vere Cole, 1944-61. Also a collection of letters from Dorelia John to Mavis de Vere Cole, 1951-61, and to Tristan de Vere Cole, 1951-68, and other letters relating to Augustus John.
  • A volume relating to Sir William William's ('Speaker Williams', 1634-1700) contribution to the parliament of 1680-81, which includes notes in his hand.
  • Autograph letter signed 'D. Lloyd George' to Sir Sidney Robinson, from the House of Commons, 14 June 1898.
  • A manuscript comprising poetry and other papers by Peggy Eileen Whistler ('Margiad Evans', 1909-58).
  • Nine letters, 1934-42, to John Petts (1914-91) from his first wife, Brenda Chamberlain (1912-71).
  • Letters to John Emyr from Kate Roberts, J. E. Caerwyn Williams, T. H. Parry-Williams, Lewis Valentine, Raymond Williams, Cardiff, John Rowlands, W. Rhys Nicholas, D. Tecwyn Lloyd, R. Tudur Jones, Bedwyr Lewis Jones, J. Gwyn Griffiths, D. R. Griffith and Gwynfor Evans.

  • Two very early black and white photographs by Roger Fenton: ‘Glyn Lledr from Pwll y Pant’ and ‘Rocks in the Lledr near Pont y Lledr’.
  • A framed black and white photograph of Roald Dahl.
  • Ten salt print photographs taken by John Dillwyn Llewelyn, c. 1850s.
  • A collection of slides of Peter Hope Jones’s work used in his publication Beauty and Spirit of Bardsey, 2008, together with a copy of the work.
  • A framed photograph of the playwright and novelist, Caradoc Evans (1878-1945).
  • A black and white photograph of a self-portrait by Angus McBean, produced by him as a Christmas card, 1954.

  • Papers of the composer Hilary Tann, comprising printed music: 'Songs of the Cotton Grass' (for soprano and oboe); 'Paradise' (for mixed choir), June 2008; 'Shakkei' (for oboe and mixed orchestra); 'Children of Grace' (for mixed choir and organ); 'Psalm 86 (Incline Thine Ear)' (for mixed choir, trumpet and organ); 'In the First Spinning Place' (final draft, May 2009); and 'High Rock Spring' (for youth orchestra).
  • A large collection of the artist Alfred Janes's papers (1911-99), including documents and catalogues relating to exhibitions; personal letters and notes; images of work; inscribed books and books on art.
  • A collection of letters and other papers relating to establishing Merched y Wawr in 1967 and the early years of the association.
  • Letters to Trevor Williams relating to Caradoc Evans (1878-1945), being the subject of his PhD research. Caradoc Evans was a story-writer, novelist and playwright, My People being his major work. The authors of the letters include Pauline Block, a maid in Caradoc's Rhydlewis home, and his wife Marguerite, who was herself an author, writing under the pseudonyms Countess Barcynska or Oliver Sandys.
  • A collection of the papers of Alun Llywelyn-Williams, c. 1965-79, relating to the period as establisher and member of HTV Wales Board, including correspondence and minutes of meetings.
  • A collection of drafts of Niall Griffith's novels, comprising Grit; Sheepshagger; Kelly and Victor; Stump; Wreckage; and Runt; and drafts and notes for his factual works Real Liverpool and Real Aberystwyth, and ephemera.
  • Papers of the Wales Women's National Coalition organisation, including minutes of management committee meetings, 2002-10, reports, AGM papers, 2003-10, photographs, CDs and other materials relating to equality for women, human rights for women and equal opportunities for the women of Wales, from the time the organisation was established until its demise on 30 June 2010.

 

 

Maps

 

  • A collection of intertidal maps, being the work undertaken by the Marine & Freshwater Sciences Group, the Countryside Council for Wales, between 1996 and 2005.
  • A map, printed in 1598 of a photocopy of the map Cambria of Wallia, by Humphrey Llwyd (1527-68), and two maps printed by J. Heywood, the one of North Wales and the other of South Wales.

 

 

Electronic material

 

  • Two CD-Roms noting details of burials, 1718-2006, at Eglwys Newydd yr Hafod graveyard.
  • A CD containing transcriptions of two notebooks (Vols 10 and 11) from the collection of Thomas Hughes, one of the contributing authors to the 1895 publication History of the Welsh in Minnesota, Foreston and Lime Springs, Iowa, and The Rhydfuddai Pioneers.
  • A CD comprising a photographic image of part of the H. M. Stanley photographic project by Craig B. Howe, being the unveiling of the Stanley statue, March 2011.
