The Gregynog Press is the most important private press in Wales. Established in 1922, the press was the brainchild of two sisters, Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, the granddaughters of the millionaire, David Davies, Llandinam. After inheriting great wealth from their grandfather’s success in industry, they funded the press at their home, Gregynog Hall, near Newtown.

42 handcrafted books were published by the Gregynog Press between 1923 and 1940. The Davies sisters were renowned for their social conscience and were very generous in their support to several Welsh institutions. Following Gwendoline’s death in 1951, Margaret Davies deposited most of the press equipment in the National Library in 1954. This included the monotype caster, the printing presses, the engraved wood blocks and a beautiful collection of Gregynog books.

Re-established in 1978 under its Welsh title, Gwasg Gregynog, the Press continues the traditions of its forebears in order to ensure that their books are among the best produced by today's private presses.

The Gregynog Press collection of finely printed books and delicate bindings presents a stunning visual feast, which is one of the National Library’s treasures.
