North Reading Room – Renovation!

Fri, 25 Apr 08 11:45:00

The work is part of the Library’s strategy to bring the best facilities and work environment to our readers. Plans to modernise the North Reading Room, where readers can access books, journals and original newspapers, follows the completion of developments to the South Reading Room in October 2004. They meet the growing needs of our readers in a room which has been largely untouched since it opened in 1916.

Mark Mainwaring & Fred Farrow of NLW inspect the plans

The new plans for the reading room include creating a WiFi zone, more spaces for private study laptops and the introduction of group study areas, which will allow groups to study and reflect upon the Library’s collections without disturbing others. The development will also include a Readers Comfort Space – where readers will be able to conduct their research in a comfort-driven environment.

The Library hopes to complete the work by the end of 2008.

According to Mark Mainwaring, Director of Corporate Services, ‘Services to readers will not be affected by the renovation. During the construction readers will be relocated to the adjacent Upper Hall, but its just business as usual. We are looking forward to creating an exciting learning and research environment, which will update the facilities and benefits we are able to offer our Readers.’

The Library apologises for any inconvenience incurred due to the undertaking of building work but trusts that the development shows our deep-seated commitment to ensure our readers enjoy the best possible facilities and resources while visiting The National Library of Wales.
