Conference Speakers

Jen Jones: Welsh Quilts: Inside and out

Jen’s obsession with quilts was triggered by those in her family’s home in Massachusetts but it was not until she arrived in Wales in 1971 that this obsession came into its own. She has written two books; Welsh Quilts - A Towy Guide and Les Quilts Gallois / Welsh Quilts. She lectures widely both here and in the United States and has frequently talked about Welsh quilts on television and radio.

Dorothy Osler: The silk mix fabrics in Welsh costumes from north Wales

Dorothy is recognised internationally as the leading expert on the historic quilt making traditions of Britain and has published books and academic papers seeking to raise awareness of vernacular traditions of quilt making including those of Wales. In 2004 she was awarded a Wingate Research Scholarship to pursue research into possible cross-cultural fusion between 19th century Welsh quilts and quilts made by Amish communities in the USA.

Michael Freeman: The written and visual evidence of Welsh costume, 1770 – 1870

Michael’s research on Welsh costumes began in 2004 when he began to read the diaries of 18th and 19th century visitors to Wales as part of another project. This was followed by the compilation of a corpus of images of Welsh costumes with a detailed study of Welsh hats and bedgowns.

Huw Roberts: Reconstructing Welsh costumes for Welsh Folk Dancing

Huw Roberts is a native of Llangefni, Anglesey and a well-known figure in Welsh folk music and dance circles. With his wife Bethan, he formed the Welsh folk dance teams Ffidl Ffadl and Dawnswyr Bro Cefni. He recently published Pais a Becon – Gwn stwff a Het Silk – a bilingual book on Traditional Welsh costume in 19th-century Anglesey.
