Some Political Memories – Lord Elystan-Morgan

Fri, 03 Oct 08 16:10:00

This year’s keynote speaker at the Library’s Welsh Political Archive Annual Lecture, is Lord Elystan-Morgan. The former MP will recall some pivotal moments from his political career in this prestigious lecture on Friday 7 November.

Educated at Ardwyn Grammar School, Aberystwyth, Elystan Morgan graduated from the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, in 1953 with a Bachelor of Law. After becoming a solicitor in 1957, Elystan Morgan controversially defected from Plaid Cymru to join the Labour party in 1965 and was duly elected as a Labour MP for Cardiganshire in 1966. He went on to serve as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of the Home Office from 1968 to 1970. Morgan subsequently lost his seat to the Liberal Geraint Howells in the February 1974 General Election.

In 1981, he was made a life peer as Lord Elystan-Morgan, of Aberteifi. He also held the position of President of the University of Wales Aberystwyth from 1997-2007.

According to John Graham Jones, Head of the Welsh Political Archive at The National Library of Wales:

'Lord Elystan Morgan was most definitely one of the most intellectual and prominent Welsh politicians of the Twentieth Century within Plaid Cymru until his move in 1965 and then in the Welsh Labour party. He had an amazing talent as a public orator and administrator. He was also very prominent in the 1979 devolution vote and within the House of Lords since 1981. It is a pleasure to invite him to The National Library of Wales to give the Welsh Political Archive Annual Lecture'.
