At the University of Wales congregation for the award of honorary degrees, to be held at Trinity College, Carmarthen on Friday 30 March, the University’s Pro-Chancellor presented a Message of Greetings and Congratulations from the University to The National Library of Wales in celebration of the centenary of the granting of the National Library’s first Royal Charter in March 1907.
The presentation was made to Dr R Brinley Jones, President of the National Library, and Mr Andrew Green, the Librarian.
The National Library of Wales and the University of Wales have more than one thing in common. From a historical viewpoint, the principal common factor is that each was founded in response to public demand – the products of the increasing wish for educational opportunity, of strong local aspirations and of a profoundly felt national inspiration.
Both institutions are also preparing for future development - the University for the implementation of radical changes planned to enable it to meet the challenges of the fast-changing higher education climate, and the Library by launching a digitalisation project of its publications, both past and future, to make them available online.
We have worked together in the past on various projects; we will welcome future opportunities to do so again as they present themselves. For now, the University is delighted to mark this milestone by presenting its greetings and congratulations in a formal way
