The National Library of Wales is proud to announce that Ffion Hague will be the keynote speaker at a special lecture organised by its patrons scheme, Chapters. This is the first in a series of special events organised for 2009. The lecture is to be held at the Reardon Smith Theatre, National Museum Wales, Cardiff on Thursday, 5 February.
Cardiff-born Ffion will deliver a speech on her popular new book The Pain and the Privilege - The Women in Lloyd George’s Life. The successful book deals with the numerous women in the fascinating and complicated private life of the iconic First World War Prime Minister, David Lloyd George. We see the early influence of his mother Betsy and a new perspective on his relationship with his wife Margaret, and her key contribution to his political success.
As Ffion, a graduate in English Literature from Jesus College, Oxford, herself states:
‘Lloyd George’s life was indeed a perpetual conflict. There were many private scandals in a life devoted to politics and public duty. As a doubtless lover of women, he always put politics first as many of his women found out to their cost.’
In a survey of 150 MPs commissioned by Waterstone’s during the summer of 2008, the book topped the list of books MPs were taking away on their summer holiday.
In the wake of the book's popularity the National Library of Wales has opened this Chapters event to the public. It also offers the opportunity for people to have a taster and introduction to this exciting Library scheme.
Andrew Green, Librarian added:
“It is with great pleasure that we can note that Chapters has been a great success during its first year and we are truly greatful for the support of its members to the work of the Library.
We aim to ensure that the Chapters members have memorable experiences and we are therefore very appreciative of the support of prominent Welsh people such as Ffion Hague. It is a pleasure to have her address our members in Cardiff and it promises to be a excellent evening.”
