The National Library of Wales to fly patron saint’s flag on 1 March

Sat, 21 Feb 09 15:45:00

Visitors to The National Library of Wales or those viewing the building from the town on St David’s day will see a flag flying from the Library rooftop that will be unfamiliar to some.

The yellow cross on a black background is the flag of St David’s. It will be flown over the weekend and on Monday 2 March to commemorate Wales' patron saint’s day.

Flying the flag is part of a series of events at the Library to celebrate St David’s Day. The activities start on Saturday 28 February with the opening of John Meirion Morris’ ‘Presence’ exhibition – sculptured works of art inspired by Wales’ people and Celtic tradition, by the Llanuwchllyn-based artist who was at one time a lecturer at Aberystwyth. One of John’s most famous works is his proposed 30m monument to commemorate the drowining of Cwm Celyn to make way for the Tryweryn reservoir near his native Bala. A bronze model of the statue, which some have refered to as an iconic work similar in effect to the ‘Angel of the North’ (although John’s idea predates that) will be at the exhibition.

During Monday 2 March, visitors to the Library will be able to enjoy traditional folk songs and also members of the Library’s staff performing traditional folk tunes at the Library’s Pen Dinas café.
