Leading expert on Nazi Germany to talk at Aberystwyth

Mon, 18 May 09 15:22:00

 Prof. Richard J Evans

Professor Richard J Evans, a renowned historian and one of the leading experts on the Nazi period, will be returning to his roots as keynote speaker at a special lecture organised by The National Library of Wales’ patrons scheme Chapters.

The recently appointed Regius Professor of Modern History at the University of Cambridge will deliver a speech on ‘Looted Art in Europe 1938-45 and its restitution since the Second World War’. The lecture will to be held at the Drwm, National Library of Wales on Wednesday, 27 May at 19.30 pm

Born in London, of Welsh parentage he has strong family links with the Machynlleth area. His father's family came from a farm near Pantperthog, and his uncle ran the H J Evans Drug Store at 25 Maengwyn Street, Machynlleth, for about 20 years after the war.

Since acting as principal expert witness in the David Irving libel trial before the High Court in London in 2000, Professor Richard J Evans's work has dealt with Holocaust denial and the clash of epistemologies when history enters the courtroom. He recently published The Third Reich at War, 1939-1945, the third and final volume in a three-volume history of Nazi Germany.

Andrew Green, Librarian notes, ‘It is nearly 70 years since the start of the Second World War and the subject of looted art is extremely timely. The US state of California has recently returned three Renaissance paintings that were confiscated from Jewish art dealers in Nazi Germany during the 1930s, to the heirs of their former owners; they had been on display at a California museum for over thirty years.

We aim to ensure that the Chapters members have memorable experiences and we are therefore very appreciative of the support of prominent people such as Professor Richard J Evans. It is a great pleasure to have him address our members and it promises to be a excellent evening.’
