From 1 June 2009 The National Library of Wales will charge a small fee for visitors and users for parking at the Library site. The fee for cars and motorcycles will be £1 for 4 hours or £2 for 8 hours or a full day (up until 18:15 hours). The fee is applicable to vehicles parked in either the red or white bays. Drivers with a valid disabled badge are exempt from paying.
However, parking receipts can be used as payment towards one purchase in the Library at the Pen Dinas Café, Shop or photocopying services on the day of parking only. Money will not be refunded against parking receipts.
The Library in recent years has extended the number of parking spaces available on site, but parking spaces remain at a premium and the spaces available fill up by the early morning. This is mainly due to people that are neither staff nor users of the Library services or facilities parking their cars on site.
According to Arwel Jones, Director of Public Services at the Library, ‘The parking fee scheme is part of an initiative to control the car park more effectively by releasing more parking spaces to Library users. Spaces outlined in red are specifically for users of the library and located in the most convenient spot for access to the Library building itself. Users and readers who have bought a parking ticket can redeem the cost of parking against other purchases within the Library, a scheme which is common among other similar institutions.’
