Vertical Dance performance at the Library this Friday

Tue, 16 Jun 09 17:07:00

Vertical DanceKate Lawrence, a vertical dance performer will perform Descent of the Angel on Friday 19 June at 13.30 pm from the roof of The National Library of Wales.

Kate is a lecturer in dance studies at the University of Surrey in Guildford. She has been researching and teaching vertical dance at the university for 5 years. Vertical dance combines dance with the equipment and movement of rock climbing. Kate makes dance performances that use the walls of buildings as her ‘floor’ and uses the opportunity of being suspended from above to ‘fly’.

According to Kate ‘It is a great honour to be invited to make a descent from such an iconic and special building as the National Library of Wales.’

The performance is part of the Living Landscape Conference taking place at Aberystwyth University. According to the conference co-ordinator Dr Heike Roms,

‘In a way we didn't choose the National Library to stage the performance, but the performance because it allows us to engage with the Library. The National Library makes a strong architectural statement and is an important feature of the Aberystwyth landscape. Given the theme of the LIVING LANDSCAPES conference – performance, landscape and environment – we were interested in staging a work that would allow us to engage with the extraordinary architecture of the Library and be visible also from the town. It also continues for us an existing collaborative relationship with the National Library, which is very important to us, and we are grateful to the Library for this opportunity.’
