David Hurn announced as guest speaker at Lens Photography Festival

David Hurn. Copright Andrew SpearinThe National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, have announced that Magnum Photographer David Hurn will be guest speaker at their annual photography festival Lens on 20 November 2009.


 


The Lens Festival is now in its 5th year, having attracted a broad spectrum of speakers including photographers such as Philip Jones Griffiths and Rhodri Jones to academics based within the Library.


 


Hurn, UK born but of Welsh decent will look back at his 50-year career as a documentary photographer in a speech entitled ‘50 Years a photographer – without suffering malnutrition’. A self-taught photographer, Hurn began his career in 1955 as an assistant at the Reflex Agency, leading to becoming a full member of Magnum in 1967. In 2000 he published his book Land of My Fathers, a book of photography on Wales that truly reflects Hurn's style and creative impetus.


 


The festival is hosted by The National Library of Wales who hold the largest photograph collection in Wales comprising of over 800,000 photographs, ranging from the earliest know photograph taken in Wales (Margam Castle 1841, Calvert Jones) to contemporary photographers working in Wales.


 


Other speakers confirmed for the event in November include Aberystwyth photographer Keith Morris, Russell Roberts from the University of Newport and Dr Paul Bevan and Jane Henley, both staff at The National Library of Wales.


 


According to Arwel Jones, Director of Public Services, ‘This year’s Lens programme is shaping up to be an unmissable event. David Hurn has a longstanding international reputation as one of Britain's leading reportage photographers, we are very excited that he will be joining us for this year's Lens, adding to the growing reputation of this fantastic festival.’
