The National Library of Wales helps WWF’s Earth Hour head into record territory

Tue, 23 Mar 10 15:14:00

With less than a week to go before WWF’s Earth Hour takes place, the global initiative has become bigger than ever, surpassing all previous years’ events. Last year 88 countries got involved in the initiative and with 2010 seeing more than 100 countries taking part a ripple will cross the Earth as landmarks in 25 time zones switch off their lights on Saturday 27 March 2010 at 20:30.

Andrew Green, Librarian of the National Library said:
"Environmental sustainability is a key element of Library policy. It's therefore an honour for the National Library of Wales to be involved in this significant event, and more than apt that one of Wales's most iconic buildings will be featured"

The Library joins a long list of recognisable landmarks that are again supporting Earth Hour for the second year running. This includes the Millennium Stadium, the Senedd building, Newport’s Civic Clock Tower, the Oval Basin and St David’s Hotel and Spa.

Anne Meikle, Head of WWF Cymru said: “We are delighted to see so many landmarks across Wales switching off and supporting WWF’s Earth Hour. It’s helped make Wales part of a global sensation.”

“This years Earth Hour hopes to attract some one billion people worldwide and WWF Cymru want as many people in Wales to take part and make their contribution count by signing up online at www.wwf.org.uk/earthhourwales in order to show world leaders that we care about climate change and it’s devastating affects on people and the natural world.”
