The Library at the Guardian Hay Festival

Fri, 28 May 10 16:26:00

For a taste of the Library’s collections, visit the Guardian Hay Festival during the last week of May and beginning of June. An opportunity to hear a presentation about Hunter S Curtis’s photographs of Native American; a presentation about the White Book of Rhydderch and the Mabinogi; also a special presentation for authors about the importance of saving their work before their collections are lost.

Lyn Lewis Dafis, Head of the Library’s Digitisation and Metadata Unit will present the lecture on Hunter S Curtis’s extraordinary black and white photographs of the Native Americans. These photographs were taken at the beginning of the 20th century and are amongst the most remarkable photographs in the Library’s collections. The lecture will take place at 18:45 Tuesday 1 June 2010.

Professor Sioned Davies of Cardiff University, one of the leading Mabinogi experts, will give a presentation on the White Book of Rhydderch and its contents. The White Book of Rhydderch is one of the Library’s most famous manuscripts as it includes the earliest and most comprehensive version of the Welsh mythological cycle, the Mabinogi. This presentation will take place at 09:00 Sunday 6 June.

As well as the 2 lectures which are part of the Hay Festival event, the Library will also be sharing a site with numerous other Welsh institutions associated with Welsh literature. They are - The Academy, Wales Arts Council, and the Assembly’s Culture Department. The site is called Culture Cymru, where various talks and events will take place throughout the week.

Come and join us at Culture Cymru for a coffee and to hear Ifor ap Dafydd of the Library’s Welsh Literature Archive give a talk especially tailored to authors about saving their literary archives in the digital age. He will give the presentation twice; at 16:00 Monday 31 June and 11:00 Friday 4 June 2010.
