The National Library of Wales Open Day 2011

The National Library of Wales will again throw open its doors on Saturday 29th January as we host our annual Open Day. Past open days, which include numerous events such as talks, presentations, behind the scenes tours and gallery talks, have proven popular - and this year’s event will not be an exception.

Numerous events have been arranged throughout the day, with events for adults and younger visitors. Events include behind the scenes guided tours of the Library’s specialist departments. The tours will look at the Library’s Conservation Unit, which works to ensure that the Library’s collections are kept in the best conditions; the Digitisation Unit, as well as give an insight into the library’s recycling facilities.  

In addition a series of lectures and presentations will be held which include:

  • Family History Resources at The National Library of Wales with Beryl Evans
  • Art Workshop held by the Library’s Education Service
  • ‘Kyffin the Legacy’ presentation about Sir Kyffin Williams’s collection at the Library
  • ‘Writing about the Real Wales’ two prominent Welsh travel writers, Niall Griffiths and Peter Finch discuss their views of today’s Wales
  • Unveiling a portrait by David Griffiths of Rhodri Morgan, former First Minister of Wales
  • Story Time Suitable for children under 9 years of age
  • Gallery Talk Small World travel in Wales and beyond. Carys Mai, curator of this major exhibition, takes you on a journey of discovery.
  • NLW Friends Event: 'Ledi Amy: An appreciation of the life and work of Amy Parry- Williams, 1910 - 1988. Rhidian Griffiths.


Additional events held during the day will include a wool spinning demonstration by Keith Rees of the National Wool Museum; Adrian Keenan of Ceredigion County Council will be discussing ways to reduce household refuse and the Centre for Alternative Technology will demonstrate a wide range of alternatives and discuss options for people to achieve a positive change in their own lives.
