Archive Films on Swansea’s BBC Big Screen

Wed, 20 Apr 11 08:51:00

Shoppers and passers by in the centre of Swansea will from this week catch a glimpse of the city in the past. From this week, archive footage of Swansea from The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales’ collection will be screened on the BBC’s big screen located in Castle Square.

In all, five films from the Archive’s collection will be screened, and includes footage of landmark buildings in the city in 1952, including the TIR John Power Station (now demolished), the Guildhall and the University Library in Singleton Park. As well as the visit of H.R.H. Mary, The Princess Royal, to a Girl Guide Rally at Singleton Park, Swansea, May 28th 1938, there is also footage of the dock area during the second world war.

Located at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales is home to a comprehensive and unrivalled collection of films, television programmes, videos, sound and music recordings relating to Wales and Welsh interests.

Anwen Pari Jones from The National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales said;

'Films from our collection are already shown on the BBC Big Screen in Cardiff, so it’s great that films can now be viewed on the screen in Swansea as well. Hopefully, those passing by will take a minute to watch the films, and it will not only give them an insight into Swansea’s past, but also, ignite their interest in the Archive’s films. We’re always looking for new ways to share our material, and this is a great new platform.'

County Archivist Kim Collis said;

'The BBC Big Screen has already proved itself as an excellent venue for films from the archives, so I’m very pleased to see new films being added to the stock that is regularly shown. I hope it will whet people’s appetites to discover more about our shared history.'
