The National Library of Wales website now offers an innovative service which will be of great interest and benefit to learners of the Welsh language.
Thanks to BBC Vocab tool users can get the English translation of unfamiliar words in Welsh.
Users of the Library website would have noticed a new Vocab button in the upper right corner of the Library’s web pages. This button can be turned on and off to activate the Vocab facility. When Vocab has been activated it starts searching through the text on the website and highlights the familiar words of Welsh.
Readers can then place their mouse cursor on a word that has been highlighted and Vocab shows a translation of it. There's also a link to the full definition of the word in the BBC's online dictionary site so that readers can go to that site for more help if they wish.
'Vocab is part of a partnership between BBC Wales and the Welsh Language Board using vocabulary collected by Canolfan Bedwyr at Bangor University. We are extremely pleased that the National Library of Wales, which operates totally bilingual, is now able to take advantage of this great technology,’ said Andrew Green, Librarian of the National Library of Wales and who has learnt Welsh himself.
