The National Library of Wales are keen to find out the whereabouts of three young Montgomeryshire girls photographed in Welsh costume in the 1960s - can you help us find them?
The young girls, Jane Brandrich, Nerys Jones and Daphne Black. were photographed Geoff Charles in August 1965. They are dressed in Welsh costume on a rather rainy day. The wonderful image is being used by the Library as part of their series of outreach events held in Newtown this October and November. (see photo below)
Nia Lewis, of the Library’s Communications unit, would like to find out more about the girls and invite them to some of the events organised by the Library in Newtown.
‘Every year the National Library of Wales leaves Aberystwyth and organised a series of events in another town. Last year we were at Wrexham, in 2011 it’s Newtown’s turn. When we saw this delightful photograph by Geoff Charles of Jane, Nerys and Daphne we knew this was the image to use. We’d like to meet the ‘girls’ and maybe arrange a new photo. But this time, they won’t have to wear the Welsh costume!’ said Nia, who’s from Machynlleth.
William Troughton, the head of the Library’s photographic collection, explained a little more about Geoff Charles.
‘Geoff Charles donated his vast collection of 120,000 images to the National Library over a decade ago. He took pictures from the 1930s until 1969 mostly of the Border region for papers such as the County Times but also of significant Welsh events for the Welsh language weekly, Y Cymro,’ said Will who’s also curating the J.B. Willans exhibition at Newtown High School.
The National Library have organised a series of events in Newtown as part of their effort to inform the public of their work. With many people from the Newtown area travelling to Aberystwyth the Library is also a potential venue which could interest those who wish to visit the magnificent building and its exhibitions or conduct research into family history or any other subject.
