Siân Lloyd at NLW President’s Evening in Newtown

Wed, 02 Nov 11 14:19:00

The well-known and popular television presenter and weather forecaster, Siân Lloyd, will be special guest at the National Library of Wales’s President’s Evening in Newtown on 10 November 2011.

The President’s Evening will be the culmination of two months of activities organised by the National Library of Wales with partners in the Newtown area.

During the Evening, the Library’s President, Lord Dafydd Wigley of Caernarfon, will introduce the highlights of the events. They will include a short presentation by Mrs Davies, the Headmistress of Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd on the work undertaken by the Library’s Education Unit in the school, especially work by the Library’s artist in residence, Luned Rhys Parri.

There will be a presentation on the digital scans made of archives brought in by Newtown people to the local history session at the Monty Club. The Library will also welcome the ‘Three Young Girls’ which have been used on the Library’s publicity posters and flyers – Daphne Jones, Jane Brandrich and Nerys Jones.  A photo of the girls was taken by Geoff Charles at the Newtown National Eisteddfod in 1965.

The evening’s special guest, Siân Lloyd, is not stranger to Newtown. Although most of her work is based in London she also lives in Aberhafesp. She also  worked for the Mid Wales Development Board in Newtown in the 1980s and has many friends in the area since then.

‘I’m especially proud to be working with the National Library of Wales in Newtown. The National Library is a unique treasure and I always enjoy visiting the wonderful Library building and enjoying the exhibitions in Abersytwyth. I also admire the work which they undertake across Wales and beyond. I’m looking forward to the President’s Evening in Newtown. It’s a great honour to take part.’ said Siân.

Among the highlights of the last two months at Newton have been a very popular screening of The Last Days of Dolwyn at the Regent Cinema; a successful family and local history day at the Monty Club; an exhibition of photos of Montgomeryshire by J.B. Willans at Newtown High School and an exhibition of old photos of Newtown in the newly refurbished Theatr Hafren.

There is a warm welcome to all to attend the President’s Evening which will be held at the Elephant and Castle in Newtown at 6.30 p.m. Friday 10 November. There will be refreshment.
