Plas Lluest's New Exhibition

Mon, 17 Sep 07 16:01:00

Plas Lluest day services for people with learning disabilities launched they’re latest exhibition at The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth on Friday 7 September. The exhibition, 'Our Library Through Silence and Sound' is a collection of multi-sensory artworks by members of Plas Lluest Art Project to celebrate 100 years of The National Library of Wales. Visitors will be able to touch exhibits including Braille and the use of paper and fabric as well as enjoy photographs and video clips.

Plas Lluest day services supports 22 Ceredigion people with learning disabilities in day time activities. Plas Lluest attendees are active in a variety of work placements in and around Aberystwyth, working in supermarkets, cafes and garages and on various smallholdings and the charity’s projects include dog walking, helping to dig over allotments, and shopping for elderly people who are finding life difficult. The organisation has strong links with the local college and art centre. The charity’s mission statement is to ‘support people with learning disabilities so that they live their lives to the full’.

Plas Lluest’s partnership with The National Library started 5 years ago when the charity had a temporary exhibition for six of its attendees who showed a strong artistic flair. In November 2005, eight of its artists had another exhibition entitled ‘Aber yn yr Haf’ (Aber in Summer) showing work that they had developed during the previous summer.

‘Plas Lluest are delighted to be part of The National Library of Wales’s centenary celebrations in 2007. Our 8 artists enjoyed a tour of the Library in April after which they decided how they wanted to depict the building and artefacts in a variety of media. The exhibition ‘touch and feel’ has a strong sensory flavour which I’m sure will stimulate and excite visitors,’ said Pamela Marsden of Plas Lluest.

The exhibition is supported by Mencap and Prospects.
