Of a Feather – an avian alphabet

Wed, 10 Oct 07 09:47:00

The exhibition by the Montgomeryshire-based artist which opens on 20 October 2007 and closes on 5 January 2008 contains 31 large engravings and 30 small engravings.

'Of a Feather – an avian alphabet', is a wonderfully poetic alphabet of collective nouns which is also published as a book by the Gregynog Press. The National Library is honoured to be the first venue in a wide tour of this beautiful exhibition.

Of a Feather is Colin See-Paynton’s second exhibition at The National Library. ‘The exhibition had been a cherished and enduring dream that I might one day produce a thematic series in the form of a beautifully made book and that would also be strong enough also to justify their presentation in an exhibition. This is that exhibition, Of a Feather and it represents the realisation of that long held dream.”

Colin See-Paynton's works are admired by many, including the naturalist, Sir Richard Attenborough; “His delight in the lines of a bird so elegantly inscribed by the cut of his graver, his skill in varying texture even though he only has black and white with which to do so, his palpable pleasure in composing his subjects into joyous designs have brought something new to the portrayal of birds,” said the famous author and presenter.

Colin See-Paynton lives in the village of Berriew in Powys and is well known as a distinguished exponent of wood engraving. He is a Fellow of the Royal Cambrian Academy, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and a member of the Society of Wood Engravers. He exhibits widely in group and solo shows and is a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. His work is represented in many private and public collections including the V & A,  Ashmolean, The National Library of Wales and National Museum and Galleries of Wales.

'Of a Feather – an avian alphabet' will be officially opened at 2.00 Saturday 20 October by David Alston, Art Director of the Arts Council of Wales.
