With The Welsh Academy Encyclopaedia of Wales now available to buy from bookshops across Wales, The National Library of Wales welcomes the new addition to its shelves too as the English edition and its sister version in Welsh Gwyddoniadur Cymru yr Academi Gymreig join the books, maps, archives and pictures at its home in Aberystwyth. The work is the result of a ten-year Academi project, published by the University of Wales Press, and is funded by The Arts Council of Wales through a significant Lottery grant.

Librarian Andrew Green, said, “I am delighted to welcome the Encyclopaedia to our Library. The National Library of Wales holds the world's largest collection of works about Wales and other Celtic nations and was the source of information for many of the Encyclopaedia's entries. This publication is a splendid addition to our records.”

Marc Clement, Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University of Wales, said, “I’m proud to present the Welsh Academy Encyclopaedia of Wales to the National Library of Wales. The Library is a Welsh institution and the ideal home for this wonderful record of Wales, both past and present. This is a fantastic opportunity for visitors to the library to see and discover for themselves the fascinating facts that make this publication.”

The publication is proving to be a hit with the Welsh nation as a copy was sold on average every two minutes at Wales’s largest bookstore, Borders in Cardiff on Saturday and with a further 5,000 copies already pre-sold prior to publication, the Welsh Academy Encyclopaedia of Wales and Gwyddoniadur Cymru yr Academi Gymreig is definitely this year’s must have literature!

The Welsh Academy Encyclopaedia of Wales, retailing at £65, is published alongside its sister version in the Welsh language, Gwyddoniadur Cymru yr Academi Gymreig. Both publications are definitive works of reference and arguably some of the most important books ever to be published in Wales.

The project involved intensive research, writing and editing by four of Wales’s pre-eminent academics, Dr John Davies, Menna Baines, Nigel Jenkins and Peredur Lynch.
