Library goes to America

Fri, 15 Feb 08 12:38:00

From 16 – 23 February the Librarian of the National Library, Andrew Green, will give a presentation and visit many world-renowned institutions in Washington DC and New York.

The highlight of the visit will be on Friday 22 February, when the Librarian will give a multimedia presentation at The Arsenal in Central Park, New York on the ‘Treasures of Wales’. The presentation will be the opening event in the first ever ‘Wales in New York’ week. Over 180 persons have already booked their place for the lecture at which the Commissioner of Parks will also present a special commemorative scroll to the Librarian.

Before visiting New York, the Librarian will visit the Library of Congress in Washington DC, an institution with which the National Library has a close association. Andrew will also visit the Smithsonian Institution in the capital to discuss preparations for the National Library’s participation in a very exciting project in 2009 which will give US-wide coverage and status to Wales. In 2009 Wales will have the honour of being a ‘featured nation’ at the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

‘The National Library of Wales is not only an important institution in Wales but is part of a network of other similar libraries. Our visit and presentations in the USA will raise the profile and status of the Library and more importantly of Welsh culture and identity. It’s part of our mission to create with our partners a worldwide Welsh network and identity,’ said Andrew Green.
