Rhodri Glyn Thomas, the Heritage Minister, has announced the appointments of Mr Dafydd Wigley and Mr Arwel Ellis Owen as the President and Vice-President of The National Library of Wales. Their terms of appointment start on 1 December 2007 and will last for 4 years.

What do the faces of the old criminals of Wales say about them … and the society in which they lived and broke the law? In this year’s Lens festival of Welsh documentary photography, on Saturday 10 November, Prof Richard W. Ireland of Aberystwyth University will debate that the criminal portrait, or mug-shot, plays an important but neglected position in the history of photography, and Wales was the site of some significant early developments.

As General Secretary of the Wales TUC between 1983 and 2004, David Jenkins has vivid memories and views of Margaret Thatcher’s government and its effect on Wales and the trade union movement. At this year’s annual Welsh Political Archive Lecture on 2 November, he will recall the bitter battles but also the forgotten history of how the trade union movement cooperated with the Conservatives in government to work towards a new kind of Welsh economy.

Plas Lluest day services for people with learning disabilities launched they’re latest exhibition at The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth on Friday 7 September. The exhibition, 'Our Library Through Silence and Sound' is a collection of multi-sensory artworks by members of Plas Lluest Art Project to celebrate 100 years of The National Library of Wales.

This week sees the publication Eisteddfodau Geoff Charles - a volume of photographs by a person who did more that anyone else to capture the eisteddfodau, large and small, of Wales. Although Geoff wasn’t ever an eisteddfod competitor or organiser he travelled to hundreds of eisteddfodau across Wales from the 1930s onwards and in this beautiful collection the author Ioan Roberts chooses some of the most interesting pictures of a unique Welsh events.

A major new film festival has been launched, taking place in Aberystwyth from 25 -28 October 2007.
