Choosing to search the Illingworth Collection
You can search the Illingworth collection from the National Library of Wales's e-Resources catalogue.

Once in the e-Resources catalogue you must select the Illingworth option from the dropdown menu to limit your search to this collection.

Note regarding the language of cataloguing
English is the language used for catalogue records in the National Library, therefore you need to use English terms when searching the database.

Viewing search results
Once you have made your search a Search Results page will display thumbnail images of your results together with the name of the cartoonist, date and title of the work. The list is not in any specific order. To view a larger image you should click on the thumbnail image and the browser will display the larger image in a new window. To return to the Search Result page you should click on the 'Back' button on your browser.

Searching again
To begin a new search remember to choose the Illingworth option from the dropdown list underneath the keyword search boxes if you wish to limit your search again.

Searching the Illingworth collection by subject
To search the Illingworth collection by subject, you should remember that 6 subject categories are indexed; personal name, corporate name, meeting name, name of war, place name and subject.


Personal name
If you are searching for a cartoon of a specific person, you should search for the personal name. This can be done by entering the person's name, in the normal order in the search terms box. You should use the person's most well known name, rather that their official name.

Examples of searches by personal name

SEARCH Aneurin Bevan
(Remember that the search will return all records that contain "Aneurin" and "Bevan", wherever they occur in the record, but you can edit your search to ensure that only relevant records are returned.)


Corporate name
The term corporate name encompasses a wide range of subjects, including companies, musical groups, political parties, governments, castles, stately homes etc. It is not necessary to know which category you are searching, because all the record will be searched automatically. The process of searching for a corporate name is similar to that of searching for a personal name; you enter the name in the search term box in the normal order.

Examples of searching for a corporate name
SEARCH Trades Union Congress
SEARCH Labour Party
(This search will return all records that contain the phrase "Labour Party", but it will also return records that contain the words "Labour" and "Party").


Meeting name
Meeting name includes conferences and summit meetings.

Examples of searching by meeting name

Place names
Place names in Great Britain appear in the bibliographic record in the same format as they appear in the Ordnance Survey 1:50 000 gazetteer. Place names for the rest of the world, appear in the form given in the Library of Congress Authorities.

Example of searching by place name
SEARCH Berlin

(this search will return all records which include the word "Berlin" as well as those where "Berlin" is indexed as a place name)


Subject
Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I: Subject Terms (lctgm) was used when indexing the cartoons by subject, but where this was not possible, the Library of Congress Subject Headings (lcsh) were used instead. You should be aware that these thesauri follow American spellings and conventions. For example, to search for a car, you would use the term Automobile, the term Railroads for Railways, and Harbors for Harbours.

Name of War
The Library of Congress Authorities a Thesaurus for Graphic Materials I: Subject Terms (lctgm) was used to index the cartons. Cartoons are indexed under the name of war, where relevant, then under subject, location, or nationality.
