The following pages include exercises that can assist teachers in the task of introducing portraits to pupils. The first exercise is aimed at pupils in key stages 2 and 3, while the second exercise is more suitable for pupils in key stages 3 and 4. They can of course be adapted and presented to young people of any age.
The first section answers the question ‘what is a portrait?’ and compares portraits and other types of images or works of art. The second section explores the main reasons for creating a portrait, and what can be learnt about portraits in general from looking in detail at one particular portrait. The final section ‘The Curriculum in Wales’ explains how the exercises can be used to present sections of the school curriculum in Wales. Each section is available to download in pdf format, to be used for teaching & learning in the classroom. They are located at the end of each section.
