The National Library of Wales was established over a century ago through donations and legacies from the people of Wales who believed in the importance of preserving our heritage. These individuals helped to create one of the leading cultural institutions in the world and provide a safe home for many of Wales's treasures.
Since our creation we have worked to acquire material relating to Wales and the other Celtic nations, to conserve it and make it accessible to everyone, be that by visiting the Library itself or by using our website. The Library has always been recognised as a centre for scholarly learning and today we continue to serve as a resource for researchers all over the world, as well as providing adult education and school outreach services in Wales as a means of inspiring an appreciation of our collections.
As a charity, the Library relies on a variety of funding sources to support and develop our services, and to fulfil our commitment to acquire, conserve and educate. Leaving us a gift in your Will, however large or small, can make a real difference and help us to keep the history of Wales alive for future generations.
There are many different ways to leave a gift in your Will to the Library, and our charitable status ensures that any gift you make to us will be exempt from inheritance tax.
The most common forms of gift are:
If you are considering leaving specific items to the Library we would welcome the opportunity to discuss your donation before we receive your legacy to ensure it is consistent with our collection policy.
We recommend that you consult a solicitor to ensure your Will is legally valid, reflects your intentions and is up to date. Should you choose to leave a gift to the Library we suggest that the following wording is used in your Will to ensure that we receive your donation:
I bequeath to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion SY23 3BU, registered charity number 525775, [the sum of / % of my residuary estate / item specified] to be used by the National Library at its discretion. I further direct that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.
Every gift to the National Library of Wales makes a difference. If you are willing to let us know your wishes we would be grateful as this enables us to plan for the future and also to thank you for your gift.
