These one-to-one sessions are intended to assist readers who require guidance on where to search further into their family or local history and how to make the most of our collections and services. The session will include an introduction to the sources available within the South Reading Room such as using Findmypast and Ancestry Library to search the censuses from 1841 to 1911 along with numerous other databases. Everyone will be shown how the token system for looking at parish registers and newspapers on microfilm is used within the Reading Room. There will also be an opportunity to show how to get the most from our collection of pre-1858 wills now available online. Help and support can also be given on how to search the archives and manuscript catalogue ISYS.
These one-to-one sessions are intended as guidance to our On-line catalogues and e-Resources. These sessions will enable participants to use the Aquabrowser and the full catalogue more effectively.
There is also an introduction to our various subscription based e-resources such as the Times Digital Archive, Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO), Early English Books Online (EEBO) and JSTOR.
These one to one sessions are intended as guidance to the maps, photographs, prints and drawings collections at the Library. In its map collection, the Library has early printed maps, estate and tithe maps, and a complete run of the Ordnance Survey. The visual collection contains images of all kinds and places, and include the works of individuals such as John Parker, Moses Griffiths, and Ingleby, and in the photographic world, John Thomas and Geoff Charles.
Guidance can also be given to the Library's collection of Welsh estate papers.
Through these, the history of places and individuals before the advent of maps can be traced. If the Library possesses certain estate papers, then it will also have the relevant estate maps.
If you wish, you can specify a session which focuses on one of these aspects only.
These one-to-one sessions offer an introduction to the National Library of Wales, to people who have not used the Library before, and are unsure of what is available here. The sessions will assist you to make the best use of the Library, its collections and its facilities with the intention of helping you make the most of your time here. The session will include an introduction to the available resources in the individual Reading Rooms, how to order material for viewing, the photocopying facilities, and the general rules of the Library.
The session will act as an introduction to the archive and will include:
- An overview of the collection and the services we provide
- How to search the online catalogue and request an item
- How to submit an enquiry - in person, by phone, letter, e-mail or Question Point
- How to view and listen to material
- Basic copyright issues
- Advice on further research possibilities
