The Welsh-language magazine, Y Brython (1858-1863), has been digitised by the National Library in order to consider the amount of work involved and the issues which might arise from a project to digitise the whole of the Library's collection of pre-1900 Welsh and Wales-related periodicals on preservation microfilm. Digitisation of this collection would allow wide access to a rich body of resources for those interested in all aspects of the study of nineteenth-century Wales.
It was decided to digitise Y Brython (1858-1863) because of the general nature of its content. It was a popular non-denominational periodical, devoted to literature, antiquities and folklore, published/printed in Tremadog and edited by Alltud Eifion (1858; 1860-1863) and D. Silvan Evans (1858-1859). During its lifetime it changed from a weekly (1858) into a monthly (1858-1861) and then into a quarterly (1861-1862) publication.
The magazine has been digitised from microfilm. It was microfilmed from original copies held at the National Library as part of the Mellon microfilming project, 1988-1998, coordinated by the National Preservation Office.
