The Green Party

The 'Ecology Party' was founded in 1973 in Britain and in the 1979 General Election they had 54 candidates. All of these candidates were unsuccessful and their total votes came to 1.2% of all votes cast.

In September 1985, having not had much electoral success, the Ecology Party changed its name to the Green Party and it went on to nominate 133 candidates for the General Election of 1989.

"In the coming General Election the PLAID CYMRU/GREEN agreement gives us the opportunity to really change things. To get action on the things that matter most - for Wales and the PLANET. It is an opportunity not to be missed."

In February 1992 the 'Rhaeadr Agreement' was drawn up. This agreement confirmed the rights of the local Party to support, or accept support from, other parties. In October 1992 the Green Party formally congratulated Cynog Dafis on his election success.

The most successful election campaign for the Green Party was the 1989 European Elections, when they gained 2.3 million votes, but despite this they didn't manage to win a single seat. In the North Wales European election constituency, where Joe Wilson (Labour) gained the seat from Beata Brookes (Conservative), the Green Party got 15,832 votes. At this time membership of the Green Party in Wales was at a low of 400 members, but they came third in three out of the four constituencies, in front of the Liberal Party.

In Ceredigion there was co-operation between the leaders of Plaid Cymru and those of the Green Party since 1981, and in the Plaid Cymru Conference of 1989 it was agreed that meetings should be held occasionally with the Green Party to discuss a 'Green' Economic Policy for Wales. As a result of these meetings the Green Economic Policy was drafted.

In the General Election of 1992 Cynog Dafis was elected as MP for Ceredigion and he represented both the interests of Plaid Cymru and the Ceredigion Green Party. By the 1997 General Election the official agreement between the Green Party and Plaid Cymru had come to an end. Cynog Dafis stood as a Plaid Cymru candidate, with the unofficial support of the Ceredigion Green Party.
Green Party 1999 (24K)

" Green politics is based on simple facts that we can no longer ignore. We have only one fragile planet to share, to care for and to pass on to future generations. We all need a clean environment, a healthy way of life and a peacful world for our survival.
Instead, we see our planet being ripped apart by greed, stripped of its natural resources, overwhelmed by pollution and threatened by War and ecological disasters. We face a bleak future if unless we change things now"
