Judgement of Maredudd ap Rhobert on the dispute concerning Deupiu (Pen Clun) and Hirard.
Judgement of Maredud son of Rhobert, lord of Kedewig, appointed by Llywelyn, lord of Wales, to settle the dispute which was being stirred up between the heirs of Hirarht and Deupiw and the men called 'fetanieht' who claim those lands against the said heirs. On the peremptory day and at the place defined by law, namely Landinan, in the presence of wise men and nobles, the counter-claim of the 'fetanieht' and their challenge were justly and equitably determined and settled. At first, they were offered the decision of upright men called 'deduriht', but they refused, knowing that they could gain nothing from this. But they afterwards agreed that twenty-four of the nobles belonging to the province of Arwistli should with respect to their challenge decide on oath whether they had any right to the said lands. But all these nobles swore publicly that they knew nothing about the right of those men in the said lands. But just when their counter-claim ought to have been finished with, they requested again that the aforesaid cause be committed by means of a legal trial to the decision of judges, and thus the following judges from Arwystli came forward to take up the cause, namely, Kenher son of Kadugan, Ioab son of Ioruerht of Kedewig, Idneuet son of Goronui, Ioruerht Pastan, and other wise and discreet men from other provinces who decided that the 'fetanihet' and their offspring were not heirs to the said lands, while the other true heirs were contesting this lawsuit in the presence of many witnesses. As for the 'fetanihet', when they saw that their right was failing on everey side, they withdrew defeated in law. But in the days of Hywel son of Ioab, those 'fatanihet' had been justly and rightly deprived of those lands.
